Sedimentation Studies of Epidermal Keratins. Keratin A and Keratin B
Electrophoretically homogeneous keratin A and keratin B were studied in the ultracentrifuge. Both preparations revealed two fractions: one which sedimented rapidly and another which sedimented slowly. This indicated that both preparations are heterogeneous with respect to particle size.
متن کاملThe Functional Diversity of Epidermal Keratins Revealed by the Partial Rescue of the Keratin 14 Null Phenotype by Keratin 16
The type I epidermal keratins K14 and K16 are remarkably similar at the primary sequence level. While a structural function has been clearly defined for K14, we have proposed that a function of K16 may be to play a role in the process of keratinocyte activation that occurs after acute injury to stratified epithelia. To compare directly the functions of the two keratins we have targeted the expr...
متن کاملEpidermal differentiation and keratin gene expression.
The epidermis of the skin is a stratified squamous epithelium, which plays an important protective role. It manifests this role by building an extensive cytoskeletal architecture, the unique feature of which is the presence of keratin filaments. There are two major pairs of keratins in the epidermis: one pair is expressed in dividing cells and the other expressed in terminally differentiating c...
متن کاملKeratin 13 is a more specific marker of conjunctival epithelium than keratin 19
Introduction To evaluate the expression patterns of cytokeratin (K) 12, 13, and 19 in normal epithelium of the human ocular surface to determine whether K13 could be used as a marker for conjunctival epithelium. Methods: Total RNA was isolated from the human conjunctiva and central cornea. Those transcripts that had threefolds or higher expression levels in the conjunctiva than the cornea wer...
متن کاملKeratin Filaments of Cultured Human Epidermal Cells
Human epidermal cells grown in culture synthesize abundant keratins. These keratins are similar to those of stratum corneum of human epidermal callus in their insolubility in dilute aqueous buffers, their molecular weight range of 40,000 to 60,000, their immunological reactivity, and their ability to assemble into 80 A tonofilaments in u&-o; but there are differences in the molecular weights of...
